Most persons who are employed are covered by a disability policy in the event that they are injured or get sick and cannot continue to work. Although no two policies are the same, typically a policy will specify that benefits are available for the first two years of disability under the ‘own occupation’ test — this means, you are entitled to benefits if you are unable to return to the job you were doing when you were injured.
After two years, you are entitled to benefits only if you meet the ‘any occupation’ test — this means, you are entitled to benefits if you are unable to return to any job for which you’re reasonably suited or for which you can be retrained.
